The UAE’s hospitality industry has performed better during the Eid Al Fitr holiday this year compared to 2019, with occupancy rates and rooms exceeding pre-pandemic levels, according to the consultancy in hotels STR.

Abu Dhabi hotels had an average occupancy rate of 79.1% on May 2, 4.5% higher than on the Eid date two years ago (June 4, 2019). Similarly, Dubai’s occupancy rate stood at 75.4% over the same period, 19.7% higher than the comparable pre-pandemic rate.

“This strong performance is another sign of recovery and demand momentum for the Middle East,” said Philip Wooller, Senior Director, Middle East and Africa, STR.

“While these key markets saw higher occupancy levels, they also posted room rates that were in some cases nearly double what was reported in 2019,” Wooller said.

Dubai recorded room rates above 700 dirhams ($190.58), up 75% from 400 dirhams in 2019. Properties in UAE recreation areas such as Ajman, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) have also seen steep increases, with Ras Al Khaimah asking for more than 1,000 dirhams for an overnight stay during Eid.

STR said hotels in Ajman and Fujairah also exceeded occupancy levels seen before the pandemic. While RAK hotels had slightly lower occupancy levels than in 2019, they had the highest average daily rate among UAE markets at 1,022 dirhams on May 2, more than 47% higher than the pre-pandemic comparable.

Bahi Ajman Palace Hotel, managed by Hospitality Management Holding (HMH), congratulates its team on a year of superb CSR initiatives which were implemented in 2021.

The hotel’s mangrove planting project in Ajman aimed to reduce harmful greenhouse gases that cause climate change, as well as protect these stunning local ecosystems.

On World Cleanup Day, they announced their new solution to reduce plastic waste by giving out reusable bags sewn by in-house tailors using recycling discarded linen. Another green recycling initiative was carried out in conjunction with DGrade’s Simple Bottles, where the hotel’s PET (polyethylene terephthalate) waste is now converted into high-quality yarn for textile production. Towards the end of the third quarter, the ‘Swap & Shop’ event was held where co-workers’ pre-loved clothes and accessories were sold at a price of just AED 1.00 per item, with proceeds going to humanitarian causes. .

Throughout 2021, Bahi Ajman Palace Hotel participated in Emirates Environmental Group’s “For Our Emirates We Plant” initiative, converting a long-term waste management program into tree planting:

A massive fire that broke out on the roof of a hotel in Dubai on Wednesday afternoon was brought under control by firefighters within 18 minutes, Dubai Civil Defense said.

Authorities said the fire destroyed several air conditioners on the roof of the Swissotel Al Murooj hotel in the Burj Khalifa area. The cause of the fire remains uncertain.

The building was immediately evacuated for life safety as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

The operations room received a report of the fire, which sent thick plumes of black smoke over downtown Dubai, at 3:19 p.m.

Firefighters from Zabeel, Al Rashidiya and Barsha stations were immediately dispatched, reaching the site in just four minutes. The fire was brought under control at 3:41 p.m., before cooling operations began 10 minutes later.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

Officials said the crash has been referred to the proper authorities for further investigation.

Tea is enjoying a new appreciation among young people as the trend accelerates toward healthier, low-caffeine, antioxidant-rich and natural beverages, says Dilmah.

Hotel occupancy in Dubai hit a 15-year high last month following Expo 2020.

Dubai‘s hospitality industry reported 90% or more occupancy in any given month for the first time since 2007 in March, thanks to the final weeks of Expo 2020, which ended on March, 31st.

Expo 2020 Dubai recorded over 24 million visits during the six-month event and welcomed 192 countries. The mega event accelerated the recovery of the local economy after the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides the hospitality sector, retail, tourism, aviation and many other industries have benefited from the Expo.

A recent report commissioned by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce found that 76.5% of businesses in Dubai said Expo 2020 Dubai had boosted business growth, while 73.5% entered into new partnerships.

According to STR, occupancy reached 91.7% in March, while average daily rates reached Dh891.46 and revenue per available room (RevPAR) at Dh817.9.

“As with previous Expos in Shanghai (2010) and Milan (2015), the end of the ‘mega event’ proved to be the busiest for Dubai. The last time monthly occupancy in Dubai hit 90% was in March 2007, when there were around 90,000 fewer rooms on the market,” he said.

Moreover, the ADR level was the second highest in Dubai in the pandemic era, behind December 2021, when it reached Dh948.56, and the market’s RevPAR was the highest since December 2015.


“Looking at daily data, occupancy was over 90% for 25 days during the month with a peak of 96.0% on March 24,” STR said.

There were 759 hotels and hotel establishments counted in Dubai in January 2022, compared to 711 in January last year.

Overnight stays in January were 3.04 million in the same month this year, up from 2.65 million in January 2021, according to a recent Dubai Chamber report.
